2026 is a midterm year — turnout is typically much lower.

In low-turnout places, every ballot speaks for more than one person.

How it works
Your number is how many eligible citizens there are in your county for every person who actually voted: eligible citizens ÷ votes cast = 100 ÷ turnout %. If only half of eligible citizens vote, each ballot cast speaks for two people.
Data
- Votes cast, presidential (2024): total votes for U.S. President in the November 2024 general election, by county, from official state records compiled by the MIT Election Data and Science Lab.
- Votes cast, midterm (2022): the highest vote total for any statewide race (U.S. Senate, governor, other statewide offices and ballot questions) or for U.S. House summed across districts, by county. This is the standard proxy for ballots cast when no single race appears on every ballot. Built from MIT Election Data and Science Lab precinct-level returns. Indiana (where many counties didn’t report precinct data), Phillips County, AR and Power County, ID use county-level certified totals instead.
- Eligible citizens: citizen voting-age population (CVAP), 2020–2024 American Community Survey 5-year estimates, U.S. Census Bureau special tabulation (released January 2026).
